Scientist jobs are responsible for conducting biomedical research and development in hopes of advancing healthcare and knowledge about life processes which can lead to new drugs, vaccines, and treatment procedures for different health conditions and diseases. Scientist careers can be found in the private industry, university, or government laboratories.

The minimum educational requirement for career as a medical scientist is a Ph.D. in biological science. This will allow for people to research basic life processes and examine and analyze the results of experiments. Undergraduates planning to have a career as a medical scientist will study mathematics, chemistry, biology, engineering, physics, and computer science. After completion of their undergrad degree they can opt to specialize in their advanced degree. Usually medical scientists spend some time at postdoctoral position before they apply for more permanent positions. Licensure for scientists requires completing an accredited medical school, pass a licensing examination, and complete 1 to 7 years of graduate medical education.

In 2006, there were 92,000 scientist jobs employed with many positions held within colleges and universities. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be an increase in employment of 20 percent during the 2006 to 2016 period. This rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations stemming from expansions in research for specific diseases. Job prospects for scientist work should be excellent, despite the competition that will exists for the basics research positions and grants.
