Bus Driver Jobs

Bus driver jobs are divided into two distinct types. School bus drivers transport children to and from schools and related functions. Transit and intercity bus drivers both transport individuals across or within states, through routes within a city or county, or on chartered trips and tours. Local transit and intercity bus drivers must stock up on tickets or transfers and report on trips after returning to their assigned garages.

Bus drivers jobs are restricted by State and Federal governments. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is what employers look for when they consider hiring new drivers. Individuals with previous truck or bus driving experience with good records and at least a high school diploma will be favorable but will still have to pass a written test of ability to follow complex bus schedules. Most companies also give their job candidates a formal training course that may last 2 to 8 weeks that will involve behind the wheel and classroom instruction. School bus driver jobs will receive nearly the same amount of driving instruction with around 1 to 4 weeks of driving instruction. This will include driving instruction and classroom training. The minimum age of 21 years old is required for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations although most intercity and transit bus companies prefer to hire applicants that are 24 years of age for bus driver careers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics bus driver employment overall is expected to increase around 10 percent between 2006 and 2016, which is about as fast as the national average for all occupations. There will be good opportunities for individuals seeking bus driver jobs.
